What changes in seven weeks
If you've ever felt hesitant or uncertain when supporting a client through deep loss, you are not alone, and you don't have to navigate it without a map. Many new therapists enter grief work with immense heart but limited confidence, simply because standard training rarely covers practical execution.
Over seven focused weeks, we'll replace guesswork with clear, actionable direction. You'll learn to recognize somatic grief responses in the body, hold a steady presence through overwhelm or dissociation, and use the SHIFT Framework to structure your sessions smoothly. We'll replace clinical language with language that helps clients feel truly seen, while helping you establish a healthy professional rhythm that sustains your passion for this work.
This course moves beyond theory to help you grow into the grounded, confident therapist your clients need.
The seven-week prerecorded online program
Week 1: Understanding Grief: The Full Landscape
Expand your definition of grief well beyond loss to death. You'll explore why grieving is non-linear, examine how cultural context shapes how loss is held and expressed, and learn to identify when ordinary grief transitions into clinical trauma.
Grief is vast, deeply personal, and operates on its own timeline. Our role isn't to fix it, but to witness it with steady, unconditional compassion.
Week 2: The Grieving Body & Nervous System
Develop somatic awareness for both yourself and your clients. Learn how to apply the window of tolerance to keep sessions grounded, clearly articulate somatic grief responses, and use both bottom-up and top-down techniques to soothe an activated nervous system.
Navigating grief isn't just cognitive; it's a whole-body experience. Meet your clients in their somatic reality, and guide them to listen to their bodies with care.
Week 3: Trauma, Loss, & The Therapy Room
Learn to recognize trauma responses in grieving clients, including signs of dissociation. Assess client triggers with confidence, understand common defense mechanisms, and gain gentle strategies for supporting clients who tend to suppress or avoid emotional pain.
Understanding how the mind and body protect against painful grief isn't an obstacle to healing; it's the map. Learn to read it with gentle curiosity.
Week 4: The SHIFT Framework
Explore all five phases of the SHIFT Framework, complete with practical session scripts and client-ready language. Practice effective opening, mid-session, and closing prompts, and learn how to track a client's progress seamlessly from initial intake through termination.
S: Safety and Stabilization
Establishing emotional safety and grounding before processing begins. "What does feeling safe look, feel, and sound like for you right now?"
H: Honor the Story
Holding space and witnessing without rushing to fix things. "What needs space to be expressed today that hasn't felt fully heard yet?"
I: Identify Patterns & Internal Experiences
Noticing recurring themes and exploring internal parts. "What patterns do you notice surfacing as you navigate this loss?"
F: Foster Regulation & Forward Movement
Cultivating emotional flexibility, values, and forward motion. "What might it look like to gently move forward while continuing to honor your grief?"
T: Transformation and Integration
Integrating loss meaningfully into an evolving life story. "How has this journey, in all its pain, begun to reshape your perspective?"
The SHIFT Framework serves as a helpful clinical compass rather than a rigid set of rules, keeping you oriented while preserving presence and flexibility.
Week 5: Communication, Validation, & What Not to Say
Master language that helps clients feel deeply validated and understood. Learn to retire common phrases that accidentally minimize pain, and gain tools to support both the client and their family system, even when grief is difficult to put into words.
The words we choose in grief work carry quiet power. Speaking with warmth, clarity, and genuine presence helps grieving clients feel less alone in their pain.
Week 6: Grief Across the Lifespan & Trauma-Informed Modalities
Explore how grief manifests across different developmental stages, from childhood into adulthood, and how a client's relationship to loss evolves over time. Learn to identify survival guilt and leave with a broad overview of complementary trauma-informed modalities to explore in your ongoing training.
Every client's experience of loss is uniquely shaped by their stage of life, personal history, and what they have survived.
Week 7: The Therapist's Inner Life: Sustaining Yourself in Grief Work
Learn to recognize and navigate countertransference, spot early signs of compassion fatigue or vicarious trauma, and build sustainable self-care practices. You'll discover how your own self-awareness can become a powerful clinical asset rather than an obstacle.
Sustaining meaningful grief work starts with caring for yourself, honoring your personal limits, nurturing your well-being, and staying grounded.

About your instructor
Marisol Garza, M.S., LPC-S
Hi, I'm Marisol Garza, a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor based in Texas. I earned my Master of Science in Counseling in 2006 and have served clients in community settings since 2017 and in private practice since 2020. I supervise associates working toward full licensure, so I spend much of my week helping new therapists navigate the same clinical challenges we cover in this course.
My advanced clinical approach is grounded in specialized training, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Advanced EMDR Training with Flash and Four Blinks protocols, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Somatic Therapy. I am also a Certified Grief Educator and Grief Movement Guide, and I see individual clients in my own private practice.
I created the SHIFT Framework as the practical guide I wished I'd had when I first started out, and I'm glad to share it with you here.
What this is not
This online course is an educational program and does not constitute therapy or clinical supervision. Enrolling does not establish a clinical or supervisory relationship.
This program does not offer continuing education (CE) credits.
Week 4 introduces concepts from Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Week 6 covers various trauma-informed approaches. These modules offer a clinical introduction rather than formal certification, and I'll provide a list of training resources for those interested in pursuing formal certification and/or training.
Questions
How much time per week?
Plan for roughly 2 to 3 hours per week to review prerecorded video lessons, complete readings, and reflect. On weeks with live online calls, add one hour for the group session.
What if I miss a live online call?
No worries! Every live online session is recorded and uploaded within 1 to 2 days along with a brief summary, so you can easily stay up to speed.
Can I get CE credit for this online course?
No, this online course does not provide CE credits.
Should I have done the 90-minute online workshop first?
Not at all! While many cohort members start with the workshop, it isn't required. The cohort is designed as a standalone, deep-dive experience.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes! I offer a payment plan of two monthly installments of $259, spaced 30 days apart.
What if I fall behind?
You retain ongoing access to all online course materials! Feel free to progress through the modules at whatever speed best fits your workload.
Will you run it again?
I plan to offer the online course again in the future at a higher price point. Joining this founding cohort now secures the lowest available cost.
Why should I trust a first cohort?
As part of our very first group, you'll enjoy uniquely direct access and personalized interaction with me, Marisol, at our early-bird pricing. In exchange, you'll be helping me pilot the online course before future iterations!
Seven weeks of prerecorded lessons. Four live group calls with an LPC-S. Only fifteen seats. Starts Saturday, January 9, 2027.
P.S. Still deciding? Start with my 90-minute online workshop on Saturday, October 24th, 2026, to get a feel for the material, then decide whether the 7-week online cohort is your best next step!
